In recent years, the safe biodegradation of biobased materials and products according to specific environmental conditions has become a priority for policymakers worldwide. With waste littering reaching the level of a global emergency, there's a pressing need to address the release of harmful substances from waste streams, such as plastic litter, which impacts soil, water, and biodiversity in both land and marine habitats. This situation calls for viable end-of-life solutions, and biodegradability stands as one of the most promising options.

Biodegradation is a natural process where organic substances are broken down into simpler, smaller compounds by microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, or algae. This process occurs under specific environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, and oxygen levels. It is essential to differentiate between biodegradation and compostability. While compostability refers to the ability of a material to break down in a composting environment, biodegradation encompasses various environments and standards.

During the PRESERVE training, provided by Normec OWS and European Bioplastics on 24 May 2024 at 10 AM CET, we will learn what biodegradation encompasses within the bioplastics value chain.

Biodegradation in the context of waste management and environmental sustainability (10:00 AM - 10:05 AM)

The session will kick off with an introduction to the importance of biodegradation in the context of waste management and environmental sustainability. Participants will gain insights into the current global scenario regarding waste pollution and the role of biodegradability in addressing this pressing issue.

Biodegradation: The Basics (10:05 AM - 10:25 AM)

During this segment, attendees will delve into the fundamental concepts of biodegradation. They will learn about the natural process through which organic substances are broken down by microorganisms, as well as the environmental factors that influence biodegradation. Additionally, the distinction between biodegradation and compostability will be elucidated, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of these concepts.

The Different Biodegradation Certificates (10:25 AM - 10:40 AM)

In this section, participants will explore the various certification schemes related to biodegradability. Attendees will learn about the criteria and standards set forth by these organizations, as well as the significance of obtaining biodegradation certificates for ensuring the safe and effective management of biobased materials and products.

EU Projects Results focused on biodegradation (10:40 AM - 10:50 AM)

The session concludes with a discussion on EU projects focused on biodegradation. Initiatives like PRESERVE aim to substitute conventional fossil plastics with bio-based or recycled alternatives, with biodegradation serving as an essential end-of-life option. Attendees will gain insights into the results and outcomes of such projects, as well as the role of organizations like Normec OWS in advancing research and testing in the field of biodegradation.
